Mike Self has been the director at Croatan High School since 2017. Prior to becoming the director at Croatan, Mr. Self was the Director at Broad Creek Middle School from 2014-2017 and Chowan Middle School from 2008-2014. Mr. Self was selected as the 2013 Chowan Middle School Teacher of the Year and the 2016 Broad Creek Middle School Teacher of the Year. Mr. Self also received the 2013 NC ASBDA "Encore" Award honoring the achievements and service of new band directors and promoting the ASBDA mission of fostering rising talent in the music education profession. Under his direction, bands have consistently earned Superior Ratings at Music Performance Adjudication events performing literature in Grades II-VI. In 2019, the Croatan Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at the NC Music Educator's Annual In-Service Conference. Mr. Self actively serves as a guest clinician and adjudicator as well as the NCBA Eastern District President-Elect. Mr. Self is a member of NC Bandmasters, the National Association for Music Education, and the American School Band Director's Association.
